Description: 20 cm to 60 cm high, runner-forming, grassy meadow grasses with greenish to red ears and 1 mm to 2 mm long grains; perennial; leaves 3 mm wide at most; the base leaves in fact are bristly; flowering time: VI - VII; average fodder grass; eight minor species or subspecies have been described.
 
Occurence: Common in fields, poor soil, as well as pioneer grass an paths and forest clearings; Except for F. rubra L. (s. str.) all minor species are specialized for moors, high mountain regions or shore regions.
 
Related species: There are more than two dozen Festuca species which thrive in almost all biotops from the planes to the high mountain regions. The blooming period goes from May to September.
