Description: A spiked, runner-forming grass up to 150 cm high; in contrast to ryegrass the seed heads face the rachilla with their broad side; perennial; flowering season: VI - VIII; roots up to 80 cm deep; nitrogen indicator;
 
Occurence: Frequent on wasteland, along paths and cultivated fields (a feared field weed, especially in former times), however only rarely forming dense stands; occurs in three subspecies;
 
Related species: Agropyron caninum (L.) P. B., bearded couch; widespread, but rare in North and North-West Germany (VI - VII); Agropyron junceum (L.) P. B. ssp. boreoatlanticum Sim. & Guin., sand couch; widespreach on coastal dunes (VI - VIII);
 
Allergy trigger: Pollen, 30 - 40 µm;
 
Invasions path: Inhalative (June - August);
 
Synonyms: Elymus repens (L.) Gould;
 
Allergology: Allergenic relevance has so far been insufficiently researched, however it surely does not belong to the most important allergens;
